SUSAN LEE

"I remember going home and saying, 'This is it! I've found my calling!'"

Susan Lee grew up studying dance in the suburbs of Chicago. With a BS in Dance and PhD in Educational Psychology, her work focuses on training students for a lifetime of working healthily in the field. She is the founding director of the Dance Program at Northwestern University and co-produced the first three Jazz Dance World Congresses.

July 25, 2017: Susan Lee describes the types of dance training available to her as a child, explains how her studies in dance and psychology relate to one another, and recalls what was involved in establishing the dance program at Northwestern University. She discusses dance education and pedagogy at length, as well as the importance of creating community in arts environments. This interview was recorded in her office at Northwestern University.
